Fort Knox Gold Mine
The Fort Knox Gold Mine is an open pit gold mine in the Fairbanks mining district of Alaska. Mining and exploration properties are located within the Fairbanks mining district, a northeast trending belt of lode and placer gold deposits that comprise one of the largest gold producing areas in the state of Alaska.The land that the Fort Knox mine sits on was originally staked in 1913 with no mining taking place. There was no activity in the area (typically placer mining takes place in the area), until the area was restaked in 1980 by two prospectors, and leased to various mining companies. Hycroft mine is located 87 km (56 miles) west of Winnemucca in Humboldt and Pershing Counties, Nevada, USA. Initial exploratory drilling that targeted copper and sulphur mineralization was conducted in 1974. Homestake drilled it again in early 1980s and discovered shallow oxide gold mineralization. A small scale gold oxide heap leach mining operation started in 1983.Hycroft is a conventional open pit mining operation that treats the oxide ore through heap leach methods and recovers the gold by using a Merrill Crowe method.
