The Ankle Brachial Index The ankle brachial index is a test that compares blood pressures in the upper and lower limbs. By checking your blood pressure in different areas of your body, your doctor can determine the presence of lower-extremity determine arterial disease. The ankle brachial index has been shown to be a specific and sensitive metric for the diagnosis of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). |

Normal ankle brachial index (ABI) An ABI ratio of 1.0-1.40 is considered normal. An ABI ratio between 0.9 and 1.0 is borderline. An ABI ratio of 0.9 or less means you have Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). An ABI ratio between 0.4 and 0.7 means you have moderate PAD.An ABI ratio less than 0.4 means you have severe PAD. An ABI ratio higher than 1.4 could mean the blood vessels in your limbs are stiff due to things like advanced age or diabetes. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) when narrowed arteries reduce the blood flow to your limbs,PAD can cause leg pain and increases the risk of heart attack, transient ischemic attack, stroke and other cardiovascular problems. |
